Home school, also called home education, is the process by which children are educated at home rather than at an institution such as a public or private school. In the United States, homeschooling can be an option for parents who wish to provide their children with a quality of education they believe is unattainable in schools.

The parents or guardians can employ someone else to teach in home schools. Any employed tutor must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). The law addresses curriculum requirements for home study programs. The law requires the home schools to operate the equivalent of 180 days or at least 4.5 (four and one-half) hours of instruction per day unless the child is physically unable to comply with this requirement. The law states that the instructor of home schools must write an annual progress assessment report in each required subject area accredited for each student and that the reports must be retained for at least three years.

The home schools unit provides leadership and technical assistance to nonpublic and home schools. Consultation and information are provided to families, nonpublic schools, local and intermediate school districts, state agencies, and other interested parties. Consultative assistance for obtaining services for special needs students home and legislative clarifications are also provided. Home schools are one parent teaching the child in their own home, rather than sending the child to a traditional school. Home schools require the parent to spend time teaching, take field trips, coordinate music and physical ed lessons, create lesson plans, school grade papers and all other duties involved in a school day. This is a viable option for many families that do not feel their child's educational needs are being met in a traditional school. One of the many advantages of home school is the ability to tailor-design your schoolwork to suit your educational goals and tastes. While it is fantastic to be able to spend your time on the esoteric subjects close to your heart, it is also crucial to develop more basic skills like concise writing, critical reading, and persuasive speaking. More and more home schools are discovering that, while it is great to be able to create an individualized schedule and curriculum, there are also tremendous advantages to joining forces occasionally with other like-minded families. Homeschooling your child through his or her senior year in high school can be demanding and difficult. There are many things to consider as we guide your child through their final years of their secondary education and on towards college. Here are a few ideas to discuss with your child concerning their final and important years of education. Expenses generally skyrocket in the last few years with more challenging textbooks to purchase and additional after school activities. Some cities have homeschooling co-ops established to help parents cope with the rising cost of education. Local libraries can be an excellent informational resource and also give other homeschoolers a place to meet or share advice. One of the best low cost options is to join the local home school organization and share textbooks with other parents as often as possible to defray the expense.

The Home School Office was established in October 1999 to promote collaboration accredited between home school parents, public schools and the Arkansas Department of Education. The office is a unit within the Department's Division of Learning Services, Special Programs. The primary responsibility of the Home School Office is to provide information and technical assistance on laws and regulations governing home schools to all interested persons. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the Home School Office to modify, update and disseminate the Notice of Intent to Home School and Waiver forms to all school districts before the current school year begins. Parents/guardians are required to file current year pre-printed forms with their local school district superintendent's office on an annual basis according to state law. The Home School Office receives home school student data from all 252 school districts. This information may be used only for statistical purposes and test administration. The office compiles and publishes a Home School Report in June of each year that provides enrollment statistics for the previous year.
